Sarah
Here is what I have been working on.

Sarah,
I will be away from the computer most of the day but late this afternoon I will check back.
Jeanine

Jeanine,
Rather than mess up the file you already started, I'm just going to include my compare/contrast below. I didn't look at yours first because I wanted my ideas to be "fresh." Delete or change anything you think needs altered (leave a note when you've done this). I'll then add the new/changed information to the Venn Diagram and mark it as FINAL so it can be graded. Does this work for you?
~Sarah

Similarities:
  • Both were created in the 1880’s
  • Both include Uncle Sam
  • Both reference how the United States accepted or worked with those from other countries

Differences:

Hoodwinked:
  • colors are brighter (red, orange yellow)
  • inside a well-decorated building
  • President Grover Cleveland is wearing a red cloth pin with his name. Why does it have his name? Does this show that he supports or promotes himself? He appears to be clapping as if in anticipation for what will soon transpire with Uncle Sam.
  • Uncle Sam, with his eyes covered Chang Yen Moon, smiles as though he’s being led to a great and wonderful surprise. Is this legitimate or is it a trick?
  • Chang Yen Moon stands on a book of diplomacy and stares directly at the reader. When I researched to learn more about him, I couldn’t find anything. I assume this means that he’s a fictional character meant to represent the Chinese at this time.
  • Another man (presumably Thomas Francis Bayard) bows to Uncle Sam while holding the Chinese Treaty of Bayard. I consulted the following website to learn more about him, but nothing mentioned a Chinese Treaty. While he had relations with other countries, none of them seem to connect. (I’m sure I’m missing something). http://history.state.gov/departmenthistory/people/bayard-thomas-francis

Welcome to All:
  • Outside with bland, dreary colors
  • Caricature of Uncle Sam
  • U.S. Ark of Refuge above door
  • Free education, land, speech, ballot, lunch (not all important; not all true; LUNCH is biggest which is odd)
  • Quote in bottom right corner: "We may safely say that the present influx of immigration to the United States is something unprecedented in our generation.” Is this stated with a tone of surprise, detest, happiness, or another emotion?
  • There are stormy clouds in the upper right corner with frightening faces (one of which looks like Medusa; the other of which reads DISTRESS in the beard). Also the word WAR is written at the top right of the page. Since these images seems to be behind the people and moving toward them, it gives the impression that these are the things the people are trying to escape.
  • A sign reads "No oppressive taxes, no expensive kings, no compulsory military service, no knouts in dungeons" (knout - a whip with a lash of leather thongs twisted with wire; used for flogging prisoners). It offers a lot of hope and positive ideals for the immigrants, but are they all completely true?
  • The people boarding have different clothing styles and appear to be from different classes. I find it interesting that though they're coming to this new land full of promise for them, they don’t look very excited.
Sarah,
I like what you have come up! I think it's great! I'm ready if you are.
Jeanine

Sarah,
I went ahead and combined our information in the Venn diagram. I'm ready to turn it in if you are.

FINAL

Jeanine, this looks great! I marked it as final. :)

Sarah, thanks!
